What is your take on walking on the streets of Manhattan- no mask needed or mask required? I definitely wear a mask when I go inside anywhere and would outside if I am somewhere a little more crowded, but what I'm talking about is on a day-to-day basis, passing people as you walk but not staying in close proximity to anyone for more than a few seconds.
Great question. My opinion would be that the more places you can wear a mask, the better. However, the formula for getting infected is exposure*time. Exposures on the street in passing that last less than a few seconds are the least likely to cause a transmission event. It is not impossible, but it is very unlikely especially with outdoor airflow being as it is. I would recommend wearing a mask as a best practice, but if you are, say, drinking a smoothie while you walk and there's a lot of room on the sidewalk, it might be enough to just maintain as much distance as you can and be briefly unmasked.
